She unleashed a mash single with a title that could have been an impulsive tweet: “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” In short, 2012 was the year Taylor Swift finally became a fully locked-and-loaded pop star. Brazenly living her life in public as if she were her own reality show, Swift dated a younger Kennedy and used her previous hookups as song fodder. “Chances are, if they’re being written about in a way they don’t like, it’s because they hurt me really badly,” she told RS. “I don’t think it’s mean.” Nashville may be scratching its collective head, but the fans, as always, got it: In its first week tour, her LP Red sold 1.2 million copies, more than any album in a decade.

She sure was: “This is my last day of life before #RED,” the Nashville superstar tweeted shortly before its October 22nd release. Taylor did not disappoint Taylor. Red sold an unthinkable 1.2 million copies in its first week, more than any album since 2002’s The Eminem Show. The huge numbers made sense for an LP that was almost Michael Jackson-like in its ability to fold dubstep, Eighties arena anthems, chartfriendly gloss, mope rock, and more into Swift’s country-pop sound. Red also expanded Swift’s chief lyrical themes – romance and heartbreak – into newly adult territory, with risqué lines like: “I’ll do anything you say if you say it with your hands.” What emerged was the kind of blockbuster we haven’t seen in years, and may never see again, at least until the next Taylor Swift record.
